World Series of Poker, a Legend

World Series of Poker takes place in Las Vegas, Rio Hotel and Casino. It represents fifty poker tournaments for a month and a half. In focus, the coveted bracelet!
The legend is born in 1970in the US. Benny Binion and his son Jack had the idea and the desire to promote poker in the manner of a competitive sport. They organized a vote among some of the biggest players of the day and Johnny Moss was elected.

The following year, the main event took the form of a No Limit Texas Holdem tournament for $ 10,000 – a very important sum at the time. It was Johnny Moss again who won the tournament against 5 other players and lastly Puggy Pearson.

For a few years, the tournament was organized as a “Winner Takes All”, that is to say, that the winner of the tournament left with the entire prize pool. In 1978, Benny decided to modify this distribution: with about forty players registered, it was necessary to reward at least three of them.

Poker game, famous names, and numbers

Over the years, the World Series of Poker had their own stars: Johnny Moss, Doyle Brunson, Stu Ungar, Johnny Chan, Dan Harrington … But from 2003, the deal changed significantly.

That year, no less than 839 players competed for the title. The victory finally came back to Chris Moneymaker, an accountant who had won his ticket by playing a satellite on PokerStars for a handful of dollars. After pocketing $ 2.5 million, thousands of players dreamed of imitating him by qualifying online.

The paroxysm of participation was to be reached in 2006 with 8,773 players registered. A record that remains to this day. Jamie Gold signed, at the end of the competition, the most lucrative performance in the history of the World Series of Poker: $ 12 million!

Over the years, the events of the World Series of Poker have seen their number increase to today reach sixty events. Some are played in Hold’em, others in Omaha, others in Stud or in a mix of several variants. Sometimes on tables of ten players, sometimes on tables of six players or face to face.

All these tournaments deliver to their winner a unique and coveted trophy: the World Series of Poker bracelet.
